"Sledgehammer"

"Sledgehammer"
Performed by Peter Gabriel

If I had not read the names of the songs for this week to my sister and had her choose one for me, I would not have chosen this song. However, I can see why it was popular in its time. The sound of this song is classic to the time that it came out in.

With most songs, my focus is drawn more towards the lyrics of the song. With this one, I was drawn in by the music more. I love the instrument (I wish I could identify it) that starts out the song. The sound reminds me of ancient Egyptian based movies.

I can only imagine what people thought of this song when it came out. The lyrics are full of sexual innuendos. It seems that music is what progresses fastest in this aspect. Some of the same people that heard Elvis’ music come out were also there for the release of this song. For them to be shocked by his music, only shows how jaw-dropping music like this song must have been. If only they heard what is played on the radio now. Elvis Presley was progressive for his time, but it has only gotten worse since then.

  1. Very interesting post on the song. I knew there were songs that had sexual innuendos existed back then, but I didn't realize that Elvis and this song had them as well. I agree that what's been going on has been getting worse, though I think it's worse than a lot of people think. But I guess it's just normal now to have that stuff show up on popular radio. Good post though! It really made me reflect.
