Eleanor Rigby
Performed by The Beatles
Another classic sound: The Beatles. They have a very distinguishable sound. For some time, my sister LOVED The Beatles, so they always remind me of her.
The music in this song is so much more upbeat than the lyrics are. I have always thought that this song is happier than it is because of the tone that the music sets. The lyrics are actually really depressing. Eleanor Rigby and Father McKenzie are lonely people. That is the whole premise of the song. They both have very lonely responsibilities. Their lives only crossed at the death of Eleanor Rigby, if that can even be considered a time that their lives crossed. They still remained lonely. However, the violin gives the song a very upbeat tone that contradicts the lyrics.
One of my favorite aspects of this song is the repetition of the violin that complements the melody so well! I have always paid more attention to the violin in the background than I have to the lyrics.
I find the line "All the lonely people, where do they all belong?" to be one that is easy to ponder. Somehow many people find their place in society. The people who are lonely must belong in society somewhere. Helping them find their place takes time, but they do belong somewhere!
I'm really glad you chose this song! After my first couple listens I totally thought it was a kinda happy piece, but wow was I wrong. I definitely have to agree with you about the tone the violin gives the piece. I have to admit, I also notice the violin over everything else.
