"Hey Good Lookin'"
Performed by Hank Williams
This song is a staple piece. I’m not sure that there is any other song that my family jokingly sings more. I can’t say that I have actually heard Hank Williams sing this song more than just a few songs. The line “Hey good lookin’, what you got cookin’?” hooks the listener enough that they remember that line for a long time to come. I remember many times my dad would come home to my mom cooking and sing that line to my mom as he wandered into the kitchen.
A quick response to this song was the thought, “This shows the culture of the time. The women cooked for the men, always.” As I listened a little more, I realized that Hank sings “How’s about cookin’ somethin’ up with me?” It is apparent that this song is a bit more flirtatious than traditional.
I love the line “No more lookin’, I know I’ve been tooken.” It shows the flexibility of music. “Tooken” is one of those words that shows up with the red, squiggly line beneath it indicating it’s wrong. It adds an artistic, unique touch to the song to include a word that is improper English, and it fits well with the style of music being used.
I really enjoyed reading your blog! I love this song! It’s so catchy, and it always reminds me of my grandparents. I don’t ever remember them specifically singing this song, but the few times they ever played music when I was over, it was always Hank Williams! So whenever I hear any of his songs I think of them!
